Eastman Kodak Products External analysis of Eastman Kodak Introduction Kodak is the market leader in providing photographic products and services to consumers and commercial customers around the globe for memories, entertainment and information. The company brings inventive and modern products to the market that allows people to take, make and share pictures and experience the magic of photography (History of Kodak, 2008). As the world leader, Eastman Kodak is always looking for talented people. Kodak has continued to expand the ways and images touch peoples daily lives. Kodak is a top supplier of innovative solutions for digital, conventional and blended print production environment (History of Kodak, 2008). Eastman Kodak Company is an American multinational public company which produces imaging and photographic materials and equipment. It is known for its extensive variety of pictorial film products. Eastman Kodak is actually concentrating on two major markets; the first is digital photography and the second is digital printing (About Kodaks Graphic Communications Group, 2008). In Rochester and Jamestown New York, Kodak was founded by George Eastman and businessman Henry Strong. George Eastman as president purchased the stock of American Aristotype Company. In the year 1982, the Eastman Kodak Company was founded. The company is incorporated in New Jersey but has its offices in Rochester, New York. The slogan, You press the button; we do the rest, was given by the founder of the company, George Eastman (About Kodaks Graphic Communications Group, 2008). External analysis of Eastman Kodak Porters five forces Model According to Michael porter, an authority on competitive strategy contends that a corporation is most concerned with the intensity of competition within its industry. The level of this intensity is determined by basic competitive forces like potential entrants, suppliers, buyers and substitutes available. Using this model a high force can be regarded as a threat because it is likely to reduce profits and a low force can be viewed as an opportunity because it may allow company to earn profit. Analysis of Kodak on the basis of Porters Five Force model: Threats of new entrants: In recent years, the growing demand of digital cameras has been attracting many new comers, domestically as well as internationally. The threats of new entrant are always an issue when dealing with new technology. Often, new technology is developed by an individual looking for a better way to do something. These companies are expected to drastically alter the Kodak Companys structure with their technology, scale of operations and brand power. With Xerox, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Sony, Cannon and other major companies has already established in the market, it will be easy for new companies to enter the market and make a substantial impact. Bargaining power of customers: In the camera industry, the bargaining power of customer is relatively limited. Eastman Kodak is entering the consumer printer market which is full of competitors who produce products that allow the consumer to have significant buying power. From the sale of replacement cartridges, most producers rely on their profit margins. The buyers have a lot of power, with the companies producing quality printers at extremely reasonable values and often providing significant discounts. Eastman Kodak is responsive to this and they are launching their product into the consumer printer market. They are also making a play in the commercial printing market where the bargaining power of the buyer is not immense. Bargaining power of suppliers: The bargaining power of suppliers to Eastman Kodak is more significant than its rivals who expand and manufacture their own parts. Eastman Kodak should develop its printers, by using off the projection parts, as to get its printers on the market quicker. Rather than trying to plan everything from scratch, the Kodak Eastman should work with technology partners like SigmaTel, Inc. a chip-design specialist (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). This approach will allow the Kodak to develop faster and lower the expansion costs. The confidence for producing the parts of the printers gives the suppliers greater buying power (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). As compared to the traditional manufacturing, in the market that expanding and producing own parts may be risky in the long run risky and could pay off for Kodak. Threat of substitutes: Eastman Kodak cannot overlook the manufacturing and launching of their new consumer inkjet printers. Where on the other side, the competitors of company like H-P, Sony, Cannon and Lexmark are relying not on the turnover margin from the printer and handy cameras but they are emphasizing on the profit margin on replacing the cartridges. Eastman Kodak is marketing a quality printer, affordable cartridges, and quality paper combination to produce the highest quality prints (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The concern of the Kodak should be same as HP, Lexmark, and Epson. The emphasis of the major producers of consumer printers should be that the generic replacement cartridges and ink refill market is very strong whereas the cartridges may not produce the same quality as the name brand. The quality differentiation is not adequate to force customers from brand name to general (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). Rivalry among competitors: Rivalry among competitors could be the most significant in the Eastman Kodak. Change is rapid and fuming, with the new technology. The bundling of printers with the computers, discounts, and rebates makes this market extremely competitive (Symonds, 2006). Antonio Perez CEO of Eastman Kodak says that he has no individual rivalry with HP, but the fact is that during his 25 successful years at HP, he organized the explosive growth of HPs printer business. HP Company invests nearly $1 billion a year on research and development of printer (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). Industry forecaster anticipates HP to sit back and observe till Kodaks new equipments get grip. It is important to look at the political, economic, social, and technological components of the macro-environment, while examining the macro environment. In relation to political issues, Kodak is on par with its competitors (Symonds, 2006). To all the key competitors in the digital printing industry, social and employment legislation, tax policy, the directive and de-regulation trends and trade and tariff controls, and environmental and consumer-protection legislation applies equally (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). Economic factors that must be considered by the Kodak are rate of inflation, tax rates, capital markets and the stage of the business cycle. Eastman Kodak is a well recognized company, with the declining importance on film and an enlarged importance on digital printing; the company is behind the influence curve of their well-known competitors (Symonds, 2006). The other economical issues that Kodak must keep in mind are disposable income, GDP trends, purchasing power and wages/ price control (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). Another economic issue is cost of labor. Kodak has moved much of its labor to Mexico, this can cause decline in the sale as the company concentrates on moving labor outside of the U.S (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The political environment exercises great impact on industry and business. The political factors that Kodak must keep in view are antitrust regulations, environmental protection laws, tax laws, political stability, foreign trade regulations and stability of government. The social considerations in the macro environment of Eastman Kodak are population profiles, public opinion, and cultural changes (Ramaswamy Namakumari, 2005). The social factors which should be kept in view are lifestyle changes, rate of family formation, growth rate f population, age distribution of population. Another significant factors related to social consideration is opinion of public. In the case of Kodak, there are significant issues such as accusations of irresponsible environmental practices due to excessive pollution in the Rochester, NY area (Hamm, Lee Ante, 2007). The technological environment will play a key role in the future of Kodak. The company should emphasize on the new development in technology transfer from lab to marketplace. The company should emphasis on the internet availability, telecommunication infrastructure. Kodak should mainly concentrate on the research and development areas (Hunger Wheelen, 2001). For this, it is important that the research is well led and established with detailed visions and goals. Kodak should enlarge and produce the large number of parts as opposed to other competitors, to be developed and manufactured internally. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that the Kodak has the opportunity to be a leading player in the market of digital printing. The Company should carry on with their existing vision to produce printers and cameras that generate the highest quality of prints and construct the printer reasonably priced so as the average consumer afford it to buy (Hunger Wheelen, 2001). With this, the company should persist to expand the latest equipment for the profitable printing market and should try to merge flexibility, speed and quality with each other. To gain the market share, the most essential thing that the company should do is repetitively appraise their actions and procedure to make sure that they are right way. Use of Conventions in Literary Works Such as Shakespeares Hamlet :: Props Hamlet Tragic Tragedy Analysis

Conventions are commonly known as a customary feature of a literary work such as the use of a chorus in Greek tragedy or an explicit moral in a fable. They are found in stories, plays, essays, poetry, and movies. Conventions are found frequently in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Taming of the Shrew, and Othello. They are also detected in D. H. Lawrence’s The Horse Dealer’s Daughter and The Rocking Horse Winner, and lastly in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House. These literary devices all grasp the same conventional concept. The use of a prop in a literary work is a perfect example of a convention—each prop is used to show a significant idea in its respective literary work. William Shakespeare was an English playwright and poet. He was recognized in much of the world as the greatest of all dramatists. In Hamlet, Shakespeare provides the first prop as letters. Ophelia proclaims, â€Å"My lord, I have remembrances of yours, That I have longed long to redeliver; I pray you, now receive them† (III.I.93-95). In this citation, Ophelia gives Hamlet the letters (â€Å"them†) of poetry he has written to her. With this action, she manages to devalue Hamlet, bring forth a feeling of worthlessness and unimportance. Another significant prop in Hamlet is the fencing sword. Fencing was a common, competitive and recreational sport practiced in the Middle Ages. The sword was usually tipped with foil to prevent injury. In act V, Hamlet and Leartes engage in a game of fencing. Leartes deceives Hamlet and â€Å"unbates† his sword. The unbated sword is soaked in poison and the opponents bleed on both sides (V.II.271-273). This occurrence signifies the revenge each son is instilled with. Hamlet is mislead by his long-lived acquaintance. Deception and revenge brought him to his final resting place Also in act V, Hamlet and Horatio watch two clowns while they dig a grave. While the clowns dig, they come across a skull. Hamlet pronounces, â€Å"This might be the pate of a politician, which this ass now o’er reaches; one that would circumvent God, might it not?† (V.I.66-67). This skull resembled Hamlet’s jester who has passed away over 20 years ago. The skull represented the dead smell in Denmark. This is a turning point in the drama. Everything around Hamlet was falling; first his father, the incest of marriage, and his fair Ophelia. The props so far have lead up to the dramatic end of the play.

IBA-JUEDC Talking is childish, Debating is mature. A platform for debating and establishing issues for environment This is the first of a three part interview with Mashaed Hasan Simanta, the executive Program director of the IBA-JUEDC. Md. Saidur Rahman:   Mr. Simanta, what is your background and how did you arrive at the IBA-JUEDC? Mr. Simanta: For the last two years, I have spent time in a variety of roles in the Debate industry – ranging from debate development to marketing debating club to public affairs.For the one year just prior to joining the Institute Of Business Administration Debating Club (IBA-JUEDC), I was the marketing and public affairs leader for the organization. Then I realize I may initiate one environment debating club. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: What can you tell me IBA-JUEDC and its history? What is the mission of the IBA-JUEDC? MR. SIMANTA: IBA-JUEDC is a non-profit Debate association that was founded in 2008 with a goal of promoting the development of our deb ate skills in IBA-JU. Especially our English debate skills. We did not have any written constitution.Any rules are made by president should be passed by vote of the members. But we are working to make a constitution as soon as possible. Currently, we have more than 38 members, and our membership is comprised of Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Budhist etc people. We have executive board of 10 members. I was general member before. By the voting of general member I achieved my post. Most of the members are from the last batch 41. Every year we kick out the non active member and recruit new members. However, one thing remains constant. The highest numbers of members are always from the last batch.Again, there is little discrimination. The most of the executive members are from senior batch. Now our president is from 39 Batch. Generally, we did not prefer to give post or include in our EC members from junior. But they are the most active people. But I am the exception. Sorry. SAIDUR RAHMAN: In January 2011 your organization challenged the national teams around Bangladesh and you won at the final, how you feel about that? MR. SIMANTA: The IBA-JUEDC and its members do believe that University of Jahangirnagar study in debating was based on olots of effective data and contemporary models and that significantly improves our performance. When we were in the Final Round on the debate we found that at least 50% topic was common to us in this tournament.President generally select our practice debate topic. And It was so helpful when we went for the real life tournament. This determination was based on a methodology that included a n analysis of the current president, and provides further anything we need provide significantly greater effectiveness. In addition, many of our member have conducted comprehensive research provided new information which is compilled upwards of 60% by president. Therefore, I believe in our club president must play important role.. This is the second part of my three-part interview with Mr.Simanta, executive program director of the IBA-JUEDC. Md. Saidur Rahman: What are some of the details regarding the â€Å"improvements in debating technology and processes across the real life†? Mr. Simanta: Because many of our members are developing proprietary technology and we represent a diverse cross-section of the debating industry, I can’t speak to specific technological advances being made by individuals. That said, when you look at the processes involved in the debating are three main components: strain selection, cultivation systems, and extraction.In each of those phases, t he industry has seen exciting improvements in the technology and processes are being developed for the production of gooddebaters and that can be grown in non-profitable organization; improvements in and development of second-generation debate improvements systems; increased efficiencies in the extraction of debaters from IBA-JU students; and significant advances on co-location of debaters production facilities alongside major debaters like DUDS. These technologies are mainly green technology. Suppose we try to avoid using paper and made the other members to avoid using papers.This also encourages people outside the organization. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: You testified before us on the benefits of Debaters. For our readers who might have missed that testimony, what are some of those benefits? MR. SIMANTA: Our IBA-JUEDC database holds tremendous potential to play a key role in the development of a new debater – one driven by economically sustainable system from IBA-JU lab and power g eneration. This lab and database of around the world information benefits a sustainable good performer. * IBA-JU dc computer lab is totally free. You will get generally over 200 kb/s per second * We already have strong database about previous debaters * We have video clips of our prominent debaters. * It totally environment friendly. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: In November of 2009 one of you said that your debate industry welcomed language both Bengal and English. You will soon working on your legislation. Where is this now? There is some environment clauses. Can you give us an update on this? MR. SIMANTA: The IBA-JUEDC continues to work to engage with policymakers and legislators in IBA-JU. nd educate them on the exciting promise of IBA-JUEDC policy solutions and to advocate for policies that will help advance the industry. While it is currently uncertain the future of the specific bills you mention, the IBA-JUEDC continues to support a number of other pieces of legislation currently under consideration by Jahangirnagar University that would provide the financial and regulatory parity, as well as parity within the framework of the Debating Standard. Because IBA-JUEDC don’t currently receive the same incentives and other financial benefits currently accorded to other organization.But the environment topics are supported unanimously. This is part III of my three-part Q & A with Mr. Simanta, executive program director of the (IBA-JUEDC). Md. Saidur Rahman:   In February 2010 the Debating Committee of the Jahangirnagar University discussed and confirmed the positive potential of your debaters in terms of getting various prizes. At that time your organization said the main progress in this regard is linked to prior and ongoing technology developments. What more can be done in terms of financial decision for IBA-JUEDC involved more productive and more profitable? Mr.Simanta:   We believe that the science and the processes for the financial data production of accounting software is extremely promising and that further technological advances in the production process will only continue. Many of our members have already demonstrated their technologies in the lab(Such as tally) and at the demonstration/pilot plant scale, but the challenge is to now bring those technologies to commercial scale. To do so requires continued support from the Jahangirnagar University authority through financial and regulatory incentives (see Part II) that will help create the conditions for growth in our debating club.Without those policies in place, it will be exceedingly difficult to attract the new promising debaters. We are publishing a financial report every year. But its little bit confidential. You have to be our member to see this report. We finance most to environment developing issues. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: Where, on a scale of 1-10, would you rank ur organization? Why? MR. SIMANTA: It’s difficult to make that sort of apples-and-oranges comparison. The IBA-JUEDC believes that it is going to take a comprehensive national debating club.That said, the IBA-JUEDC believes that our debaters can play a critical role in our nation’s debating society several key attributes that make them an exciting component of our nation’s debating future. Our debaters are available in any debating program that can help provide Bangladesh with a next generation of potential debaters while also beneficially to reduce our nation’s logic scarcity and enhance our empowerment security. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: What do you see as the future of environment debaters? MR.SIMANTA: I see a great future because of their ability to beneficially producing sustainable debaters can fundamentally alter our nation’s politics someday. I see a future where major Politician will be from IBA-JUEDC. I see a future where debaters are also used not only for debates, but for politics in Bangladesh. I see a future where the debaters and its many stakehol ders have created hundreds of thousands of jobs, helped reduce our country’s unemployment, and reduced the amount of jobless person. We must contact debaters from overseas. I see the possibility of a truly great Bangladesh and truly potential students.I hope someday our forest and environment minister will be from IBA-JUEDC. MD. SAIDUR RAHMAN: What are some goals your organization has for this industry that you would like to see achieved in the not-too-distant future? MR. SIMANTA: Some of our immediate goals we’d like to see achieved are, first, the Jahangirnagar policies and support mentioned IBA-JUEDC that will help level the playing field for debaters. Looking longer term, we’d like to see any of our younger member moves to full-scale potential debaters and successful leader. I hope in all environment related issues our people will be there.

The Tell-Tale Heart In his narrative poem The Tell-Tale heart, Edgar Allen Poe tells the story of an insane madman who is in love with an old man’s eye. The story begins with the madman telling us how he loves the old man but wants to kill him because of his eye. The old man’s eye is like none other and resembles a vulture’s eye. And Poe instills his poem with the same despair experienced by the narrator by using characteristics that are typical of gothic literature such as, High Emotion, Mysterious Atmosphere’s, and Spooky Visions. One gothic element that Poe uses throughout The Tell-Tale Heart is high emotion.This is first apparent when the old man heard someone in the room. The old man sprung up terrified and said â€Å"Who is there? † alert as can be the old man stayed up and put out a terrified groan. The horrific groan of the old man contributes to the high emotion feel of the story. The other gothic element Poe uses throughout The Tell-Tale H eart is a mysterious atmosphere. This was first noticeable when the madman crept into the old man’s room and said â€Å"The room was black as pitch with thick darkness† And within the room the madman had to carry with him a lantern to see clearly.The pitch black room certainly contributes to the mysterious feel of the story. The fact that the old man is asleep and lives in a creepy place makes the story have a mysterious atmosphere. More Gothic elements Poe uses throughout The Tell-Tale Heart are Omens, Portents, and Visions that the mad man haves. These first appeared at the beginning when the mad man said: â€Å"I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and rid myself of the eye forever. † The mad man was having vision of killing the old man.The mad man started hearing a loud unbearable ringing in his ears after he buried the body under the floor and the cops came in. All of these examples certainly contribute the omens, portents, and visions occurrin g in this narrative. Tell-Tale Heart is a classic story about a mad man who stalks and kills someone because of his eye. The madman was so in love with this eye that he would be willing to take the life of an innocent old man. Deep down inside the madman’s conscious wouldn’t let him live.The madman thought everything was going to be okay but the only person that wouldn’t let him go on was himself. As the cops where talking he got an annoying ring in his head and it wouldn’t stop until he came clean. It is not surprising that this narrative poem ends on such an unhappy note, because Poe places that tone throughout the poem.
